Captain Tom Ryan was the head of the Home Office special ops team. He assisted Claudia Brown and the rest of the anomaly team by being the "brute force". He went on many missions into the Anomaly due to his experience as an army officer in the Gulf War. He preferred gunning down the creatures with his M4, rather than saving them.

Episode 1.1Edit
Ryan under orders from Claudia Brown, accompanies Nick Cutter on their first exploration through the Permian Anomaly. They find an old camp with a skeleton lying out in the open. Cutter also finds a camera marked H.C.

Captain Ryan and his team of soldiers ventures into the London Underground before the others and find an anomaly. However, they are attacked by giant spiders and are forced to retreat. On the surface, Ryan reports what they saw to Cutter, leading Cutter to conclude that the anomaly is not linked to the Permian era, but to the Carboniferous era.
Later, after Stephen gets bitten by an Arthropleura, Ryan, his team, Cutter and Connor go back into the Underground to capture it and synthesize an antidote for Stephen. After a futile search, Cutter assumes that it's gone back through the anomaly, but Connor soon finds out that it has in fact burrowed deeper underground. The three of them then follow the tunnel to a disused machinery room. The Arthropleura sees them and attacks Cutter. Ryan is forced to keep his trigger finger still long enough for Cutter to get the venom. As soon as Cutter has the venom, Ryan starts shooting the creature, which manages to knock away and break his gun. As Ryan scrambles for his gun, Connor hits the Arthropleura with a stool. The Arthropleura manages to rip the stool away from his hands, only to collide with a electrical circuit box and get electrocuted. The creature then falls from the rafters to its death. Ryan and the others then hurry back to bring the venom to the hospital.

Ryan was greeted by Cutter at the lake where the mosasaur had been spotted.
Episode 1.4Edit
When seeing the infected Dodo apprently dead, Ryan said he hated films in which the villain is thought dead, then springs up and attacks at the last moment, making Cutter and Stephen nervous.
Episode 1.5Edit
Claudia Brown said Nick and Stephen had until Ryan's men arrived to capture the Pteranodon; they caught it a few seconds before Ryan and his men came storming up the stairs with their guns. Ryan later witnessed the Pteranodon's release into the anomaly.
Episode 1.6Edit
Ryan said to Cutter that he was 'beginning to feel like a social worker' when he was relieved that they were allowed to kill the Future Predator. Ryan was killed by the female Predator who was protecting her young who had followed the team into the Permian era that had already killed a soldier. As Ryan died, he realized that he himself was the skeleton he and Cutter had found in the Permian when they first went back in time and that their camp was the old camp they had discovered in Episode 1.1.

After his death, Cutter and Helen give him and his men a respectful burial in the Permian Desert. Later, when Cutter and Helen arrive back in the present, Cutter informs the team that Captain Ryan and his men didn't make it.
Captain Ryan's spirit appears to Connor in a behind the scenes clip of Season 2 which can be viewed below.

- Ryan was the first main character to die in Primeval .
- Ryan is one of the two main characters not to encounter a dinosaur (the other being Claudia Brown).
- Ryan uses a sleek modified M4 S-System with a dot sight on top.
- In the new timeline, when the team moved to the ARC, it is unknown whether Ryan was moved there as well.
- Ryan is not mentioned by Matt Anderson during his speech in S4 Prequel Episode 4 about the people whom the ARC has lost.
- This might be due to the fact that Ryan never worked for the ARC in the new timeline. He could also have been a less important soldier compare to the others.
- Another possibility is that Matt didn't know of him. It might also be because he was of military background, and Matt was only mentioning those names to emphasize the importance of hiring people of military background.
- The latter is probably the most accurate as when Nick and Helen came back from the Permian they mentioned Ryan died and noone seemed surprised of his existence. However this also may be because they may have not known who Ryan was, because he may have been a lesser soldier in the new timeline.
- This might be due to the fact that Ryan never worked for the ARC in the new timeline. He could also have been a less important soldier compare to the others.
