The Artifact is a piece of technology originating from the Future, which was likely created by the ARC shortly before Humanity was wiped out by the Future Predators. The proper name of device is unknown, as it is simply referred to as "the Artifact." It is apparently a key to the Future ARC's computer, and produces a time map of all the Anomalies.
The Artifact is hex tube with longitudinal openings, which seem to be holographic projectors, able to project a time map of the Anomalies similar to the Matrix. The Artifact has the number sequence 65359, the code to the future ARC's computer, written on it as well. The Artifact is apparently also fragile, as Helen was able to break it by throwing it to the floor.
The Artefact is where all the Future ARC's data of every Anomaly is stored. When inserted into a futuristic ARC computer, the Artifact will make the data available for those who have the access code. Furthermore, the data can be also download into an Anomaly Opening Device, allowing the device to open and close Anomalies. (Episode 3.10)
It was theorised by Connor Temple and Sarah Page that each point in the Artifact's holographic time map where two different point in the line crossed represents an Anomaly linking the two points in time. (Episode 3.6)
The Artifact was apparently created by the Anomaly Research Centre at some point in the Future before Humanity was wiped out by the Future Predators. After the Predators were created and wiped the Human race out, the Artifact was apparently left abandoned in an old building in a ruined city.Christine Johnson sent Ross and his men into the Future on a mission to find the Artifact, the men retrieved the Artifact, but were then attacked by Future Predators. All of the soldiers except for Ross were killed, and so Ross was forced to leave the Artifact behind and return to the Present. Shortly afterwards, Helen Cutter took the abandoned Artifact and fled with it to the Present. She took it to her new makeshift base in an abandoned building, and had her Cleaner Clones put it away until she could work out what it was.
When Helen attacked the ARC in the Present on her mission to stop Humanity from creating the Future Predators, she showed the Artifact to Nick Cutter while the latter was captured. Helen believed that Nick knew what the Artifact was, but Nick didn't and just pretended to know and to refuse to tell Helen.
When a bomb blast damaged the ARC and knocked Helen out, Nick took the Artifact from her, but Helen recovered and shot him. When Connor Temple came to save Nick, the latter handed the Artifact over to him and told him to unravel its secrets before dying.Sarah Page cleaned the Artifact up and found its code to the Future ARC's computer on it.
While Sarah and Connor were trying to work out the Artifact's function, Sarah came to believe that it involved light. She and Connor then placed the Artifact in a contraption that cast light over it, and when Sarah gave up, Connor did something that caused the Artifact to momentarily produce a hologram of its time map.
When Christine Johnson took over the ARC, Connor, Sarah, Danny Quinn and Abby Maitland fled with the Artifact to an Abandoned War Cabin to keep it out of Johnson's hands. After the team were recaptured along with the Artifact, Johnson was relieved of her control over the ARC, and thus the ARC retook possession of the Artifact.
When Helen Cutter infiltrated the ARC disguised as Eve and took Christine Johnson hostage, she forced Connor to surrender the Artifact to her, and then fled with Johnson and the Artifact to Johnson's HQ. There, Helen took the Artifact with her back into the Future through Johnson's Anomaly.Anomaly Opening Device with which to travel to Pliocene Site 333 and wipe the early Australopithecus out. Helen then smashed and destroyed the Artifact by throwing it to the floor.
