In the Sterile Earth Future, Humanity are nomads moving between underground shelters because the planet's surface is barren and hostile, (Episode 4.7, Episode 5.6) infested with Mutated Future Predators and ravaged with deadly storms due to the effects of New Dawn. (Episode 5.6) Several other creatures aside from Humanity lived in this future era, including Giant Burrowing Insects, (Episode 5.1) Future Beetles (Episode 5.4) and Mutated Future Predators. (Episode 5.6)
It also appears that most remaining life lives underground, (Episode 5.1) likely due to the surface's inhospitable conditions, though the Future Predators were capable of surviving on the surface. (Episode 5.6) According to Matt Anderson, everything in his time period in the Sterile Earth Future is "either dead or dying," implying that due to the Sterile Earth's inhospitable conditions, all remaining life there will eventually die out. (Episode 4.7)
The Sterile Earth Future existed in an alternative timeline in which New Dawn was not stopped. In this timeline, the New Dawn Anomaly caused catastrophic atmospheric changes in 2011 that reduced the surface of the Earth to a sterile wasteland and left it unable to support life anymore. (Episode 4.7, Series 5)
When Matt Anderson merged the First Man-made Anomaly with the New Dawn Anomaly (which caused the two Anomalies to close, and stopped New Dawn), this apparently negated the events which resulted in the Sterile Earth Future, presumably negating the Sterile Earth timeline.
A colony of approximately fifty Giant Burrowing Insects came through an Anomaly to London at some point before 2011. One of the Insects died of gunshot wounds to its face, and the others were all killed in a gas explosion.
After Connor Temple created the First Man-made Anomaly, a swarm of Future Beetles came through from the Future and invaded the ARC. The Beetles were all killed when Connor recalibrated the Anomaly to release a gamma ray and close.
Connor awoke in the Sterile Earth, and was injured and weakened when he was caught in a toxic storm. Matt Anderson and Abby Maitland subsequently went through the Anomaly after Connor, and took shelter in an old bunker from the toxic storms. Once the storms passed, Matt, Connor and Abby returned to the surface, and despite attacks by Mutated Future Predators, they were able to escape back through the New Dawn Anomaly to the Present.
After the New Dawn Anomaly was created, the First Man-made Anomaly reopened and two Future Predators came through into the ARC from the Future. The Predators were ultimately neutralised by the ARC, and the First Man-made Anomaly and New Dawn Anomaly both closed when Matt merged the two Anomalies.
- Some fans believe that the Sterile Earth Future and the Future seen in Series 3 (in which Humanity is apparently extinct, leaving only ruined cities inhabited by Future Predators and Megopterans) are both results of New Dawn. However, a few fans see this as very unlikely, as the damage to Earth's environment in the Future seen in Series 3 seemed to be much less severe than the damage New Dawn caused in the Sterile Earth timeline.
