In a small building used by the Russian anomaly team used for captured specimens, Cutter observes a pair of small shrew-like creatures scuttling around in a tank, while explaining to Abby how the mammals inherit the earth after the K-T event.
The shrew like creature is possibly the small mammal Purgatorius from the late Cretaceous. Or, maybe, it could also be a species of small prehistoric Mesozoic mammal that is currently undiscovered, since it is stated in the book that the discovery of small mammals is extraordinary, since they have such tiny, and fragile, bones, that don't easily fossilize.
