Apatosaurus was a giant herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Jurassic period, and were hunted by creatures such as Allosaurus and other predators. It was originally known as Brontosaurus. Apatosaurus was mentioned when describing Sauroposeidon. (Fire and Water)

When people hear the word "dinosaur", many think of the long-necked Sauropods. The most famous of these was called "Brontosaurus", but it was discovered that brontosaurus fossils were the same as those of a previously named dinosaur: Apatosaurus. Apatosaurus was heavy, with a long muscular neck and elephant-like legs. It had a long whiplike tail that may have been used as a defense against large predators such as Allosaurus. It also had a sharp claw on each thumb that may have deterred attackers when it reared up on its hind legs to defend itself. Possibly traveling in herds, these dinosaurs had to eat a lot of food to keep their massive bodies going. They had to have an enormously long gut to digest all the plant material that it ate. They may have swallowed plant matter whole and ground it up with a gizzard, much as birds do today to grind up there food. They did this because they had very weak chewing teeth but had perfect nipping incisors to pull a vegetation

In the mid 1880's, victorian palaeontologist Othniel C. Marsh discovered a set of fossils that he thought were from three differrent types of dinosaurs, the first one Apatosaurus, the second Bronotosaurus, and then the third Atlantosaurus. Later, he realised that these were all the same animal and that the Brontosaurus was in fact Apatosaurus. Because Apatosaurus was the first name to be proposed, it must be the official name for this creature. So the first name is always regarded as the valid one, but the name Brontosaurus has lived on in popular culture. Apart from that, many Apatosaurus skeletons (some incomplete) have been found in many parts of North America such as Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota and many other parts in the USA.
